⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (ACC) or position 2 (ON) if the battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the small rectangular plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the center console
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cap
- With the cap removed, you will see a small white or yellow plastic tab or slot
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the slot and press down firmly on the shift lock release while simultaneously pulling the shifter out of Park
- Move the shifter to Neutral position
- If successful, you can now release the parking brake and move the vehicle

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. However, you will not be able to see the shift position indicator. Move the shifter carefully by feel: pull back one detent from Park to reach Neutral. The steering wheel will remain locked without power, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels on dollies or the steering lock manually defeated.
