🚨 2013 BMW 528i: Emergency Neutral

The F10 528i uses an electronic gear selector (EGS) shifter that is a short, upright lever with a spring-return design on the center console.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface with parking brake engaged and wheels chocked.
  2. Attempt to start the vehicle or turn ignition to accessory position if any battery power remains - the electronic shifter requires some electrical power to function normally.
  3. If the vehicle has minimal power, press the start button without pressing the brake pedal to activate accessory mode, then press and hold the brake pedal and tap the shifter forward (toward dashboard) momentarily to engage Neutral.
  4. If there is NO electrical power, the electronic shifter will not function electronically; you must access the mechanical release on the transmission itself.
  5. Open the hood and locate the transmission (under the engine, driver's side).
  6. Find the mechanical shift release lever on the transmission case - it is typically a small lever or cable near the transmission valve body, accessible from above.
  7. On F10 models, some variants have a shift lock release accessible through the center console: remove the cupholder insert or the small panel behind the shifter to access a mechanical cable release.
  8. Pull the mechanical release cable/lever while attempting to roll the vehicle, or place the transmission in Neutral mechanically via the transmission lever.
  9. Note: If completely dead, the transmission must be placed in Neutral via the transmission-mounted mechanical release, which may require professional assistance or detailed familiarity with the transmission location.
Shift-lock override location
The F10 electronic shifter does not have a simple override slot at the shifter base like traditional shifters; mechanical release is either via a cable accessible by removing center console panels (behind/under shifter area) or directly at the transmission case under the hood
With zero electrical power
The F10 electronic gear selector (EGS) requires electrical power to operate. With zero 12V power, the shifter will not respond to normal inputs. You must either: (1) jump-start the 12V battery to provide minimal accessory power to release the shifter electronically, or (2) access the mechanical release cable in the center console (requires removing trim panels) or the mechanical shift lever on the transmission itself under the hood. This is significantly more complex than older mechanical shifters.
