🚨 2000 BMW 528iT E39: Emergency Neutral

The 2000 BMW 528iT E39 wagon uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission gear selector with a mechanical gate and Park-Reverse-Neutral-Drive pattern.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
  2. Locate the shift lock override slot: look for a small plastic cap or cover on the console trim immediately adjacent to the shifter, typically on the left side near the shift button
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to carefully pry off the plastic cap
  4. Insert the screwdriver or key blade into the exposed slot and press down firmly
  5. While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the shifter forward from Park through Reverse to Neutral
  6. Once in Neutral, release the override - the vehicle can now roll freely

With zero electrical power
The E39 shift lock override is purely mechanical and does not require battery power to function. With a completely dead battery, the mechanical override will allow you to shift to Neutral. However, you will need to manually unlock the steering column if equipped with electronic steering lock (turn the key while applying slight steering wheel pressure to unlock).
