🚨 2001 BMW 528iT E39: Emergency Neutral

The E39 5-Series uses a traditional floor-mounted console shifter with electronic shift interlock controlled by the brake-light switch.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake firmly and chock wheels
  2. Turn ignition to position II (ON) if battery has any charge; if completely dead, proceed to override
  3. Locate the shift lock override: a small rectangular covered slot on the right side of the shifter base, between the shifter and the center console trim
  4. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to pry off the small plastic cover cap
  5. With the override slot exposed, insert a screwdriver or key into the slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If ignition is on, the shifter should now move freely; if no power, the override mechanically releases the lock pawl
  8. Replace the override cover when vehicle is moved

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override still functions. Remove the small cover on the right side of the shifter base, insert a tool into the slot, press down firmly to mechanically release the lock pawl, and shift to Neutral. The override works purely mechanically without requiring any electrical power.
