⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition key to position I or II if battery has any residual charge.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular slot on the right side of the shifter base, typically covered by a small plastic cap that pries off with a flatbed screwdriver or trim tool.
- Remove the cap and insert a key, small flathead screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot.
- While pressing down on the tool in the override slot, press the shifter button and move the shifter to neutral.
- If the ignition cannot be turned at all due to steering lock, you may need to wiggle the steering wheel while turning the key to release the lock.
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or rolled (with extreme caution).

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift lock override is mechanical and will still function. Turn the key to any position to release the steering lock (may require steering wheel wiggling). The override slot works without power—insert tool and depress while moving shifter.
