🚨 2008 BMW 550i: Emergency Neutral

The E60 550i uses a console-mounted electronic automatic shifter with Steptronic functionality and electronic shift lock (same shifter design as 530i).

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Apply parking brake firmly and ensure wheel chocks are in place
  2. Turn ignition to ACC or ON position if 12V power is available
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock override access - look for a small rectangular plastic cover on the console trim to the left of the shifter base
  5. Carefully pry off the small plastic cover using a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver
  6. Insert a screwdriver into the revealed override slot and press down firmly while maintaining brake pressure
  7. While holding the override mechanism down, move the shifter from P to N
  8. Remove tool and snap cover back into place

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will likely not release. Procedure: 1) Jump-start the battery to provide ACC power (engine doesn't need to run), then use override procedure. 2) If no jump-start is available, the mechanical override alone may not work reliably. The E60 550i shift lock system is heavily electronic and typically requires at least minimal 12V power to the shifter control module for the override to function properly.
