⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is engaged
- Turn the ignition to position II (accessory power on) if battery has any charge - this may allow normal shifting to neutral by pressing the brake and moving the selector left and forward to N
- If no electrical power or shift-lock won't release, locate the shift-lock override access
- Remove the small rectangular plastic cover/trim panel on the left side of the shifter base near the driver's side - it may have a small slot or notch for prying
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade into the override slot beneath the cover
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the gear selector forward to N position
- Keep pressure on the override until the shifter moves freely into neutral
- The transmission is now in neutral and the vehicle can roll

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the shift-lock override is your only option. The electronic shifter requires the override to be depressed to mechanically release the lock. A jump pack or jump-start may provide enough power to use the normal brake-and-shift method if the override access is difficult.
