The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is engaged
- If battery has any charge, turn the key to position II (accessory power) and press the brake pedal - the shift-lock should release normally allowing you to move the lever to N
- If the shift-lock will not release or there is no electrical power, locate the shift-lock override
- Look for a small plastic cover or access panel on the center console near the shifter assembly - typically on the front left side of the shifter surround or under the shifter boot trim
- Remove or pry up the small cover to expose the shift-lock override slot
- Insert a flathead screwdriver, key blade, or the shift-lock override tool (if equipped in the vehicle toolkit) into the slot
- Press down or forward on the override mechanism while pulling up on the shifter button and moving the gear selector to N
- The vehicle is now in neutral and can roll freely
