⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and parking brake is applied if possible
- Attempt to start the vehicle or put it in accessory mode by pressing the Start/Stop button without pressing the brake pedal (requires some battery power)
- With ignition in accessory mode, press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Move the shifter forward to engage Drive, then attempt to shift to Neutral by tapping the shifter upward to the first position
- If the shift interlock is preventing movement despite brake application, locate the small shift lock release cover on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side)
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry up the shift lock release cover
- Insert the ignition key or a small flathead screwdriver into the revealed slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to Neutral
- If successful, the transmission will be in Neutral and the vehicle can roll
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover on the left (driver's) side of the shifter base, approximately 1 inch from the shifter lever itself
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, you cannot unlock the electronic parking brake on this model, making flatbed towing mandatory. The shift lock override may allow shifter movement but the electronic parking brake will remain engaged. Do not attempt to tow with wheels on the ground. Jump-starting the battery enough to release the parking brake is the only way to enable rolling the vehicle.
