🚨 1997 BMW 840Ci E31: Emergency Neutral

The E31 8-series uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked.
  2. Turn the ignition key to position I or II (accessory/on) to provide power to the shift-lock system.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Press the button on the front of the shifter and move to neutral.
  5. If the shift-lock will not release with ignition power and brake applied, locate the shift-lock override slot near the shifter base.
  6. Remove the small rectangular cover cap on the console to the right or behind the shifter base (typically a trim piece that pries up).
  7. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the exposed shift-lock override slot.
  8. Press down on the override while pressing the shifter button and move to neutral.
  9. If moving the vehicle any distance, keep ignition in position I or II so the steering lock remains disengaged.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular trim cap near the shifter base on the console, typically to the right side or directly behind the shifter; pries up to reveal override slot.
With zero electrical power
With no 12V power, the shift-lock override slot MUST be used. Turn the key to position I if possible to unlock the steering column. If the key cannot turn due to dead battery affecting electronic steering lock (less common on E31), the steering will remain locked and the vehicle can only be winched onto a flatbed with front wheels on dollies or flatbed.
