⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the electronic parking brake is applied (if possible with available power) and wheels are chocked.
- Press the brake pedal and attempt to press the Start/Stop button to place the vehicle in accessory or ignition-on mode (this requires some 12V power).
- With ignition on and brake pedal pressed, move the shifter rearward one position to neutral.
- If the shifter remains locked and will not move, locate the shift-lock override access.
- On the left side of the shifter base, find a small rectangular or oval trim cap/cover.
- Carefully pry off this cap with a trim tool or small flathead screwdriver.
- Insert the key blade, small screwdriver, or provided override tool into the revealed slot.
- Press or pull the override mechanism while pressing the brake and moving the shifter to neutral.
- If the electronic parking brake cannot be released due to power loss, the rear wheels may remain locked; vehicle must be loaded onto flatbed with rear wheels lifted or entire vehicle flatbedded.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the shift-by-wire system will not function normally. Use the shift-lock override to mechanically release the shifter to neutral. The electronic parking brake will likely remain engaged with no power, locking the rear wheels—vehicle must be flatbedded or rear wheels must be on dollies/lifted. Jump-starting the 12V battery is highly recommended to release the electronic parking brake before moving.
