🚨 2021 BMW i3: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 i3 uses a small electronic monostable shifter on the steering column that returns to center after each selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON (press start button without brake pedal).
- Locate the shift lock override: it is a small rectangular slot with a cover cap on the right side of the shifter stalk base where it meets the steering column.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cover cap.
- Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to the N (neutral) position.
- If 12V power is completely dead, you cannot electronically shift to neutral; the transmission will remain in Park electronically.
- With no 12V power, activate transport/tow mode: open the hood and locate the 12V battery (under hood, driver side). Jump-start the 12V system using an external jump pack or another vehicle.
- Once 12V power is restored, follow steps 2-5 to shift to neutral, or use the shifter normally if brake-light circuit is restored.
- For flatbed towing with no power available, the rear wheels MUST be lifted or the vehicle placed entirely on the flatbed - do NOT tow with rear wheels on the ground.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic transmission cannot be shifted. You must jump-start the 12V battery (located under the hood, driver side) to restore power, then use the shift lock override or normal shifter operation. The high-voltage EV battery does not help without the 12V system functioning.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The i3 is rear-wheel drive. If towing with rear wheels on the ground while in Park (electronic lock engaged), you will damage the electric motor and reduction gear. Always tow on a flatbed or with rear wheels lifted. Do NOT attempt to push/roll the vehicle any significant distance in Park.
