🚨 2022 BMW i4: Emergency Neutral

The 2022 i4 uses a small electronic monostable gear selector on the center console that returns to center after each selection.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON (press start button without brake pedal).
  3. Locate the shift lock override access: look for a small cover/cap on the console near the gear selector base, typically on the right side or front edge of the selector housing.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the override cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the override slot and press down or pull up (depending on mechanism design) while simultaneously moving the gear selector to N (neutral).
  6. If 12V power is completely dead, you cannot electronically shift to neutral without first restoring 12V power.
  7. With no 12V power, locate the 12V battery: on the i4, it is in the right side of the trunk under a cover panel. Jump-start the 12V system using an external jump pack or another vehicle connected to the jump-start terminals (positive terminal under hood, negative ground point).
  8. Once 12V power is restored, follow steps 2-5 to shift to neutral, or use the gear selector normally if the brake-light circuit is functional.
  9. For flatbed towing with absolutely no way to restore 12V power, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground - do NOT tow with any wheels on the pavement.
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover near the gear selector base on the center console; check right side or front edge of the selector housing.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic gear selector cannot shift. You must jump-start the 12V battery (right side of trunk under cover, or use underhood jump terminals: positive under hood, negative ground) to restore electrical function, then use the shift lock override or normal operation.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The i4 is rear-wheel drive (or AWD on xDrive models). Towing with driven wheels on the ground while in Park will cause severe damage to the electric motor(s) and drivetrain. Always use a flatbed or tow with all driven wheels lifted. Do NOT push/roll the vehicle any distance while in Park with no power.
