🚨 2025 BMW i4: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 BMW i4 uses a small electronic gear selector lever on the center console, consistent with BMW's current EV design language.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if possible.
- If 12V power is available, turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal).
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Move the gear selector forward or backward to engage Drive or Neutral as needed.
- To select Neutral, tap the selector upward briefly.
- If the 12V battery is completely dead, you must jump-start the 12V system or connect an external 12V power source to the jump-start terminals under the hood to restore electronic shifter function.
- Once 12V power is restored, follow the normal procedure to shift into Neutral.
- For towing: with 12V power available, shift to Neutral, then access iDrive and enable Transport Mode (Vehicle Settings > Transport mode) which unlocks the drivetrain for short-distance towing.
- If Transport Mode cannot be engaged or 12V power cannot be restored, the vehicle MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter is completely non-functional. You must restore 12V power via jump-starting the 12V battery (terminals under hood) or connecting a portable jump starter. There is no mechanical shift-lock override button on this electronic shifter system.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The i4 is a rear-wheel-drive EV. Never tow with rear wheels on the ground unless Transport Mode is properly engaged via iDrive. Towing without Transport Mode or with a dead 12V system will cause severe drivetrain damage. Flatbed transport only if 12V power cannot be restored.
