🚨 2025 BMW i7: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 i7 uses BMW's electronic gear selector lever on the center console with no mechanical linkage.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock the wheels before attempting any procedure.
  2. Access the 12V battery in the front trunk (frunk) or use the emergency jump-start terminals under the hood if battery is completely dead.
  3. If 12V power is available, press the start/stop button without the brake pedal to put the vehicle in accessory mode.
  4. Press and hold the P button on the gear selector for approximately 10 seconds to attempt electronic release.
  5. If electronic release fails or no power available, locate the manual shift lock release: remove the small trim cap on the left side of the gear selector base (driver's side of the shifter).
  6. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the revealed slot.
  7. Press down or pull the release mechanism while simultaneously moving the gear selector out of Park.
  8. With the vehicle in Neutral, it can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.
  9. For towing: The i7 MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground - do not flat-tow or dolly-tow as the electric motors remain connected to the wheels and will generate voltage that can damage the high-voltage system.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must provide external power via the jump-start terminals under the hood or directly to the battery terminals in the frunk to energize the electronic shifter, or use the manual shift lock release override. The shift lock release may still require some 12V power to disengage electronic parking brake - if EPB won't release, the vehicle must be winched onto the flatbed.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
CRITICAL: The i7 is a pure electric vehicle and must NEVER be flat-towed or dolly-towed. The electric motors are directly connected to the wheels and will generate high voltage if the wheels rotate while in any gear, causing severe damage to the high-voltage battery and drive system. Always use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. The electronic parking brake may remain engaged with no power - winching may be necessary.
