🚨 2023 BMW iX: Emergency Neutral
The 2023 iX uses BMW's electronic gear selector lever on the center console, similar to other modern BMW EVs.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and chock the wheels before attempting any procedure.
- Access the 12V battery located under the rear cargo floor or use the emergency jump-start terminals under the hood if battery is completely dead.
- If 12V power is available, press the start/stop button without the brake pedal to put the vehicle in accessory mode.
- Press and hold the P button on the gear selector for approximately 10 seconds to attempt electronic release.
- If electronic release fails or no power available, locate the manual shift lock release: look for a small removable trim cap or access slot near the base of the gear selector on the left (driver's) side.
- Remove the cap and insert a small flathead screwdriver or the emergency key blade into the slot.
- Press or pull the release mechanism while simultaneously moving the gear selector out of Park.
- With the vehicle in Neutral, it can be rolled or winched onto a flatbed.
- For towing: The iX MUST be transported on a flatbed with all wheels off the ground - do not flat-tow or dolly-tow as the electric motors remain connected to the wheels.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must provide external power via the jump-start terminals or directly to the 12V battery to energize the electronic shifter, or use the manual shift lock release. The electronic parking brake will likely remain engaged without power, requiring the vehicle to be winched onto the flatbed. Some 12V power may be necessary to release the EPB.

CRITICAL: The iX is a pure electric vehicle and must NEVER be flat-towed or dolly-towed. Both front and rear axles have electric motors directly connected to the wheels (on xDrive models). Any wheel rotation while in gear will generate high voltage that can severely damage the high-voltage battery and drive system. Always use a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground. The electronic parking brake may remain engaged with no power - winching may be necessary.
