🚨 2024 BMW iX: Emergency Neutral
The 2024 BMW iX uses an electronic monostable shifter lever on the center console that returns to center position after each selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and properly chocked
- Attempt to power on the vehicle by pressing the start/stop button with the key fob nearby (even with low 12V battery, BMW systems may have enough residual power for one shift)
- If the shifter activates, press and hold the brake pedal, then tap the shifter forward or backward to select Neutral (N)
- If the shifter remains unresponsive due to complete 12V power loss, locate the plastic trim cap on the right side of the shifter assembly base
- Carefully pry off the trim cap using a plastic trim tool or flat-blade screwdriver wrapped in tape
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or BMW-provided key tool into the exposed shift lock override slot
- While pressing down on the override, attempt to move the shifter to Neutral position
- If the electronic shifter cannot be moved mechanically, BMW iX requires a 12V jump start to the jump-start terminal under the hood (driver side) before neutral can be selected
- Once jumper cables are connected, press start/stop button and immediately shift to Neutral before disconnecting power

Under a small plastic trim cap on the right side of the shifter assembly base on the center console, approximately 1-2 inches from the shifter lever itself
With zero electrical power
The iX monostable shifter is fully electronic and typically cannot be mechanically shifted without any 12V power. Jump-starting via the under-hood terminal (positive terminal with red cover near driver side strut tower) is required to provide minimal power for shift-by-wire system activation. Connect jumper cables, press start/stop, shift to N immediately, then maintain external power while loading.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The BMW iX must be transported on a flatbed truck - DO NOT tow with any wheels on the ground. The electric motors remain physically connected to the wheels and towing will cause severe damage to the drive units. After shifting to Neutral, the parking pawl is released but regenerative braking systems are still mechanically coupled. Transport Mode is not required for flatbed loading once Neutral is selected. If the high-voltage battery is damaged or compromised, follow BMW's emergency response guidelines for EV incidents.
