🚨 2025 BMW iX2 xDrive30: Emergency Neutral

The 2025 BMW iX2 uses BMW's electronic gear selector with a small console-mounted lever that returns to center position after each selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Locate the 12V battery access point—on iX models this is typically in the front trunk (frunk) or under a panel in the cargo area. If jumping from another vehicle or using a portable jumper, connect to the positive jump-start terminal and a ground point.
  3. Once 12V power is restored, press the brake pedal and start button to power up the vehicle systems (you do not need the high-voltage system active, just 12V accessory power).
  4. With brake pedal depressed, move the gear selector forward or backward to select neutral (N). The shifter will return to center; confirm 'N' appears in the instrument cluster.
  5. If the electronic shifter will not respond even with 12V power, check for a manual shift-lock override: look for a small cover or slot near the base of the gear selector on the console. Pry off the cover with a small flathead screwdriver.
  6. Insert the cover removal tool or a small screwdriver into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to neutral.
  7. If 12V power cannot be restored and the shifter remains locked, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground—do NOT tow with any wheels on the ground.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover near the base of the console-mounted gear selector; exact location varies but typically adjacent to or behind the shifter base.
With zero electrical power
Without any 12V power, the electronic parking brake and shift lock will not release. You must either jump-start the 12V system or load the vehicle onto a flatbed. Do not attempt to tow.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The iX2 is a full electric vehicle with no true neutral for towing. Even if you shift to 'N', the electric motors remain coupled to the drivetrain. FLATBED TRANSPORT ONLY—towing with wheels on the ground will cause severe drivetrain damage and void warranties. Do not use tow dollies.
