🚨 2025 BMW iX3: Emergency Neutral
The 2025 BMW iX3 uses BMW's electronic gear selector, a small console-mounted lever that returns to center after input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake if operational and ensure the vehicle is secure.
- Locate the 12V battery—on the iX3, the 12V battery is typically located in the front trunk (frunk) or under a panel in the rear cargo area. Identify the positive jump-start terminal (marked with a red cover or '+' symbol) and a suitable ground point.
- Connect jumper cables or a portable jump starter to restore 12V power to the vehicle. You do not need the high-voltage battery active, only 12V accessory power.
- Once 12V power is available, press the brake pedal and press the start/stop button to bring the vehicle into accessory or ready mode.
- With the brake pedal depressed, move the gear selector forward or backward to engage neutral (N). The selector will return to center; verify 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster.
- If the electronic shifter does not respond, locate the shift-lock override release: look for a small rectangular or circular cover near the base of the gear selector on the center console. Remove the cover using a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool.
- Insert a small screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while attempting to move the shifter to neutral.
- If 12V power cannot be restored and the shift lock remains engaged, the vehicle must be transported on a flatbed with all four wheels off the ground.
Shift-lock override location
Small cover located near the base of the gear selector on the center console, typically on the left or right side of the shifter housing.
With zero electrical power
Without 12V power, the shift interlock and electronic parking brake cannot be released. You must jump-start the 12V system or use a flatbed. Do not attempt to tow the vehicle.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The iX3 is a battery-electric vehicle. There is no true mechanical neutral suitable for towing. Even in 'N', the electric motors are mechanically connected to the drivetrain. FLATBED ONLY—towing with any wheels on the ground will cause catastrophic damage to the electric drive unit and void the warranty. Do not use wheel dollies or two-wheel towing.
