🚨 2011 BMW M3 E90: Emergency Neutral
The 2011 E90 M3 with DCT (M-DCT Drivelogic) uses a short electronic shifter lever on the center console with forward/back motion for gears and a separate Park button.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is secure.
- Turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) by turning the key or pressing the start button without pressing the brake pedal.
- If the shifter will not move due to shift-lock, locate the shift-lock release access point: a small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter base.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the plastic cover.
- Insert the screwdriver into the release slot underneath and press down firmly.
- While holding the release down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter rearward to Neutral.
- If brake pedal does not help, keep pressure on the override and pull the shifter directly to Neutral.
- Once in Neutral, the car can roll freely for loading onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
If the battery is completely dead, the DCT transmission computer will not function and the shift-lock override alone will not move the shifter out of Park. You must supply 12V power via jump-start or battery charger to wake the transmission control unit. Without power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be towed on a flatbed or with dollies under the rear wheels (front wheels off ground).
