🚨 2011 BMW M3 E90: Emergency Neutral

The 2011 E90 M3 with DCT (M-DCT Drivelogic) uses a short electronic shifter lever on the center console with forward/back motion for gears and a separate Park button.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is secure.
  2. Turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) by turning the key or pressing the start button without pressing the brake pedal.
  3. If the shifter will not move due to shift-lock, locate the shift-lock release access point: a small rectangular cover on the left side of the shifter base.
  4. Use a small flathead screwdriver to carefully pry off the plastic cover.
  5. Insert the screwdriver into the release slot underneath and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the release down, press the brake pedal (if possible) and move the shifter rearward to Neutral.
  7. If brake pedal does not help, keep pressure on the override and pull the shifter directly to Neutral.
  8. Once in Neutral, the car can roll freely for loading onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
If the battery is completely dead, the DCT transmission computer will not function and the shift-lock override alone will not move the shifter out of Park. You must supply 12V power via jump-start or battery charger to wake the transmission control unit. Without power, the vehicle cannot be shifted and must be towed on a flatbed or with dollies under the rear wheels (front wheels off ground).
