🚨 2012 BMW M3 E90: Emergency Neutral
The E90 M3 with DCT uses an electronic gear selector lever on the center console with positions P-R-N-D and a left-side push button for manual mode.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied
- If the battery has any charge, turn the ignition to position 2 (ON) without starting the engine
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Press the shift lock override button located on the left side of the shifter base (small rectangular button near the P position)
- While holding the override button, move the shifter from P to N
- If the ignition is on, the transmission should engage neutral; if the shifter physically moves but the transmission doesn't respond, the DCT mechatronics may need direct power
- Release the brake pedal only after confirming neutral is engaged and wheel chocks are in place

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the E90 DCT is extremely difficult to shift. The shift lock override button may allow mechanical movement of the selector, but the DCT transmission itself requires 12V power to disengage park. You may need to jump the battery with a portable pack or another vehicle to provide even minimal power to the transmission control unit. In extreme cases, the transmission must be manually released from park by a technician accessing the mechatronics unit under the vehicle, which is not a roadside procedure. For flatbed loading, the vehicle should be dollied or winched with rear wheels off the ground if park cannot be released.
