🚨 2016 BMW M3 F80: Emergency Neutral

The F80 M3 with DCT uses an electronic gear selector on the center console with a toggle-style lever: push forward for R, pull back for D, and button on top for P.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly applied
  2. If the battery has any charge, press the start/stop button twice without pressing the brake to reach ignition-on mode
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
  4. Locate the shift lock override: a small rectangular access panel or button on the right side of the shifter base
  5. Use a flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry open the override access cover if present
  6. Press and hold the override release button or insert the tool into the override slot
  7. While holding the override, move the shifter to neutral position (typically the center detent position)
  8. The transmission should mechanically release to neutral if minimal electrical power is present

With zero electrical power
The F80 DCT has similar challenges to the E90 when completely dead. The shift lock override allows shifter movement, but the DCT mechatronics requires 12V power to truly disengage park. If the battery is totally dead, connect a jump pack or booster directly to the battery terminals to provide minimal power—you don't need to start the car, just energize the system enough for the transmission control module to function. If no power source is available, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with rear wheels on dollies or skates, as the transmission cannot be mechanically forced into neutral without accessing internal components.
