The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is engaged.
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode (press START/STOP without pressing the brake pedal) to power the shifter electronics.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Move the gear selector to the neutral position (center detent position) by tapping it upward briefly from Park.
- If the shifter will not move electronically due to a failed brake-light switch or interlock fault, locate the shift lock override slot.
- The shift lock override is a small covered slot located on the left side of the shifter base near the bottom of the console trim.
- Remove the small cap or cover by prying gently with a flat tool.
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the shifter to neutral.
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or towed with all four wheels on the ground at low speeds for short distances, or loaded onto a flatbed for longer transport.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter will not function and the steering column lock may engage. Jump-start the 12V battery or connect an external power source to the jump-start terminals under the hood (positive terminal under the red cap in the engine bay, negative ground point on the chassis). Once minimal power is available, use the shift lock override method above. If the steering lock is engaged and cannot be released, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the front wheels on dollies or skates.
