🚨 2023 BMW M3 G80: Emergency Neutral

The G80 M3 uses BMW's latest electronic gear selector lever on the center console, a compact forward-back lever design with electronic shift-by-wire for the M DCT transmission.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and the parking brake is engaged.
  2. Turn the ignition to accessory mode (press START/STOP without pressing the brake pedal, or press twice without brake) to power the shifter electronics.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
  4. Move the gear selector to the neutral position by tapping it upward briefly from Park to the center detent.
  5. If the shifter will not move electronically due to a failed brake-light switch or shift interlock fault, locate the shift lock override.
  6. The shift lock override is a small covered access point located on the lower left side of the gear selector base, integrated into the console trim.
  7. Carefully pry off the small cover cap with a trim tool or flat screwdriver.
  8. Insert a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down or push in (depending on mechanism orientation) while simultaneously moving the shifter to neutral.
  9. Once in neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed; DCT transmissions should not be flat-towed for extended distances.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter and steering lock will not function. Connect a jump pack or charger to the jump-start terminals under the hood (positive terminal is under a red cover in the engine bay, negative ground point on chassis or engine block). Once power is restored, attempt to shift to neutral normally or use the override method. If the steering column lock cannot be released even with power, the front wheels must be placed on dollies or skates for flatbed loading.
