🚨 2021 BMW M3: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 BMW M3 with DCT transmission uses an electronic gear selector lever mounted on the center console that moves forward and backward but returns to a center position.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged (if functional) and the vehicle is on a stable, level surface.
- If the 12V battery is dead, jump-start the vehicle: open the hood and locate the positive jump-start terminal under the red plastic cover on the right side of the engine bay, near the strut tower. Connect jumper cables to the positive terminal and a suitable ground point on the engine block or chassis.
- Once 12V power is restored, sit in the driver's seat, press the brake pedal, and press the start/stop button to bring the vehicle into accessory mode (you do not need to start the engine).
- With the brake pedal depressed, push the gear selector forward or pull it backward to select neutral (N). The shifter will return to center; confirm 'N' is displayed on the instrument cluster.
- If the shifter will not move due to a failed brake-light switch or shift interlock, locate the shift-lock override: on the center console, look for a small rectangular cover immediately adjacent to the base of the gear selector, usually on the left side of the shifter housing.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to carefully pry off the cover.
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or the cover removal tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the gear selector to neutral.
- If no 12V power can be restored, the electronic parking brake and shifter will remain locked; the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero electrical power
Without 12V power, the electronic parking brake, DCT, and shift interlock will not release. You must jump-start the vehicle or transport it on a flatbed. Do not attempt to tow a DCT-equipped M3 with the drive wheels on the ground without the transmission in true neutral and 12V power available.
