🚨 2024 BMW M3: Emergency Neutral

The 2024 M3 uses a traditional console-mounted electronic shifter lever with positions P-R-N-D and a separate manual mode.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is firmly engaged
  2. If battery power is available, turn ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal)
  3. Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered slot on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover over the override slot
  5. Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward you to move from Park to Neutral
  6. If no battery power is available at all, you may need to jump the 12V battery terminals under the hood to provide minimal power for the shift lock to release
  7. Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or towed with all wheels on the ground for short distances at low speed (under 30 mph)

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shift lock cannot release mechanically on this generation. You must provide some power to the vehicle by jump-starting the battery terminals under the hood (positive terminal under red plastic cover, negative ground point nearby). Once minimal power is restored, use the override procedure above. If jump-starting is impossible, the vehicle must be flatbed towed.
