🚨 2026 BMW M340i: Emergency Neutral
The 2026 M340i uses BMW's electronic gear selector lever on the center console, a short lever that moves forward/backward for Drive/Reverse with a button on top for Park.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the parking brake is firmly engaged.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal, or use key if applicable) to restore power to the transmission control module.
- If the shifter remains locked due to a failed brake-light switch, locate the shift-lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, typically covered by a small plastic cap.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter back toward Neutral position.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or towed.
- If using a flatbed, leave the shifter in Neutral and ensure the parking brake is released before winching.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not function and the shift-lock override will not work. Jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to the battery to provide sufficient power for the transmission controller to release the shifter. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be dollied or flatbedded with all wheels off the ground.
