🚨 2015 BMW M4: Emergency Neutral

The F82/F83 M4 uses a traditional electronic console-mounted shift lever for the DCT transmission.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged (or wheel chocks are in place).
  2. Locate the shift-lock override access: there is a small rectangular plastic cap on the right side of the shifter base (toward the center console side).
  3. Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim removal tool to carefully pry off the cap.
  4. Insert the key blade, a screwdriver, or a rigid tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override depressed, move the shift lever rearward to Neutral.
  6. If you need to steer the vehicle, be aware the steering column lock is electronic and requires 12V power to unlock; use a jump box if necessary or load the vehicle onto a flatbed with dollies under the front wheels.

With zero electrical power
The shift-lock override works mechanically without power to move the shifter to Neutral. The steering column lock, however, is electronic and will not release without 12V power. If the battery is completely dead and you cannot jump it, the vehicle must be flatbedded with the front wheels on dollies or the entire car on the bed to avoid steering/drivetrain damage.
