⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Turn ignition to accessory position (press START button without foot on brake) if 12V power is available.
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Locate the small shift-lock override slot under a removable plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, adjacent to the P button.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter to N.
- If successful, the shifter will release from P and allow movement to N.
- Ensure parking brake is released if vehicle needs to roll.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead 12V battery, the electronic shifter will not respond to ignition or override. You must jump the 12V battery (located in trunk on right side) to provide minimal power for the shift-lock release to function. The override mechanism is electrically dependent.
