🚨 1992 BMW M5: Emergency Neutral

The 1992 M5 (E34 chassis) uses a traditional automatic transmission floor shifter with mechanical shift-lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set parking brake firmly.
  2. Locate the shift-lock override slot on the right side of the shifter base, covered by a small rectangular plastic cap.
  3. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to pry off the override cap.
  4. Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down firmly.
  5. While holding the override down, press the release button on the shifter and move the lever from P to N.
  6. The shifter should release mechanically even without electrical power.
  7. Once in N, release the parking brake if the vehicle needs to roll.

With zero electrical power
The E34 M5's shift-lock override is mechanically actuated. With a completely dead battery, the override slot should still allow you to release the shifter from Park without any electrical power. Simply insert the tool and apply firm downward pressure while moving the shifter.
