🚨 2020 BMW M550i: Emergency Neutral
The 2020 M550i (G30) uses an electronic gear selector lever with shift-by-wire technology and electric parking brake.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Chock the wheels securely—the electronic parking brake may not hold without power
- If any 12V power is available, turn on the ignition by pressing the start button without pressing the brake pedal (you may need the key fob battery to be functional or hold the fob against the steering column)
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shifter to neutral
- If the brake light switch has failed but you have power, locate the shift lock override: remove the small trim panel on the left side of the shifter base by prying gently with a trim tool
- Behind this panel is a small yellow or white tab/button—press and hold it while moving the shifter to neutral
- If there is absolutely no 12V power, the electronic shifter will not function electrically; proceed directly to flatbed towing
- For flatbed towing with no power, the transmission should be left in Park (wheels will drag slightly on loading); ensure the tow truck operator knows this is an AWD vehicle and uses proper flatbed procedures

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter cannot engage neutral. The G30 uses shift-by-wire, so there is no mechanical linkage. The transmission will remain in its last position (likely Park). This vehicle MUST be flatbed towed—do not attempt to dolly tow. All four wheels should be off the ground. The xDrive AWD system means improper towing will damage the transfer case and transmission.
