The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
- If the battery has any power, turn the ignition to accessory mode (press START button without brake pedal)
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small covered opening on the left side of the gear selector base, toward the driver
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the small plastic cover cap
- Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly
- While holding the override down, move the gear selector from P to N
- The vehicle can now roll freely; steer and brake manually as needed

With completely dead battery, the shift lock override must be used. The electronic parking brake will remain engaged with no power—this requires either jump-starting the 12V battery to release the EPB electronically, or the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with rear wheels lifted or on dollies. Do not attempt to tow with rear wheels down when EPB is engaged.
