🚨 2026 BMW M550i: Emergency Neutral

The 2026 M550i shifter configuration is not confirmed; it may continue the electronic lever or adopt a new design if generational changes occur.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the parking brake is engaged and the vehicle is on level ground
  2. If the battery has any power, turn the ignition to accessory mode (press START button without brake pedal)
  3. Look for a shift lock override slot near the gear selector base—typically on the left side or front of the selector housing
  4. If found, use a flat-blade screwdriver or key to carefully pry off any plastic cover cap
  5. Insert a screwdriver, key, or similar tool into the override slot and push down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, attempt to move the gear selector to N
  7. If no override slot is visible, consult owner's manual or look under small trim panels around the shifter base
  8. The vehicle can now roll freely; steer and brake manually as needed
Shift-lock override location
Location cannot be confirmed for 2026 model year; check near shifter base on left side or consult vehicle documentation
With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, the shift lock override must be used. The electronic parking brake will remain engaged with no power—this requires either jump-starting the 12V battery to release the EPB electronically, or the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with rear wheels lifted or on dollies. Do not attempt to tow with rear wheels down when EPB is engaged.
