⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and wheel chocks are in place.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press start button without brake pedal, or use emergency key access if battery is dead).
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly.
- Press the shift lock override button located in the small rectangular slot to the left of the gear selector base on the center console.
- While holding the override button down, move the gear selector from P to N.
- If the vehicle has NO power at all, see noPower notes below.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: Use the emergency key blade (stored in key fob) to unlock driver door. Mechanical access to the shift lock may require removing the center console trim panel around the shifter base. Once trim is removed, locate the mechanical shift lock release mechanism on the left side of the shifter assembly and manually disengage it while moving selector to N. This is a complex procedure - strongly consider jump-starting the 12V battery first (jump post under hood) to use the electronic override method instead.
