The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and the parking brake is engaged.
- Locate the shift lock override slot — it is a small covered opening on the right side of the shifter base, near the P button.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or similar tool to pry off the small rectangular cap covering the override slot.
- With the ignition off (or in ACC if you have any battery power), press firmly down into the override slot with the screwdriver.
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button on top of the lever and move the shifter rearward through R to N (neutral).
- Release the override tool and verify the shifter remains in N — the dash may not display this without power, but the transmission will be mechanically unlocked.
- The vehicle can now roll freely; use wheel chocks and verify neutral engagement by attempting to push the vehicle slightly.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, the electronic shifter display will be dark and the shift lock remains engaged. The mechanical shift lock override slot still functions — use it to physically release the shifter into neutral. You will not have dash confirmation of gear position. The steering wheel will remain locked unless you can restore some 12V power (jump pack or donor vehicle) to at least ACC mode.
