⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and apply the parking brake firmly
- Turn the ignition to position 1 (accessory) or 2 (ignition on) if battery has any charge remaining
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening covered by a black plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, just forward of the leather boot
- Use a small flat-blade screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the plastic cap
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pressing the brake pedal (if power available) and moving the shift lever to neutral
- If no electrical power is available, push down the override while pulling the shifter toward neutral—you may need to rock the vehicle slightly to relieve transmission load
- Once in neutral, the vehicle can be pushed or towed (with front wheels on the ground for short distances only)

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot unlock the steering column electronically. You must use the mechanical shift lock override to shift to neutral, but be aware the steering will remain locked. For flatbed towing, this is acceptable. For dolly towing, you must have sufficient battery power to at least unlock the steering column (position 1). Consider jump-starting from the underhood jump-start terminal (under the hood, positive terminal cover near the right strut tower) to get minimal power.
