🚨 2011 BMW X3: Emergency Neutral
The 2011 X3 (F25 generation) uses BMW's electronic gear selector lever (EGS) on the center console that returns to center position after each gear selection.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure vehicle is secure and parking brake is engaged
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Turn the key to position 2 (ON) or press Start/Stop button to ON position without starting engine
- Push the gear selector lever forward (toward dashboard) briefly - it will spring back to center
- The transmission should shift to Neutral and 'N' will display on the instrument cluster
- Release the brake pedal carefully and verify the vehicle can roll
- If the battery is completely dead: locate the shift lock override mechanism
- Look for a small removable trim cover just ahead of the gear selector base on the center console
- Pry up the trim cover carefully with a flat tool or your fingernail
- Insert the mechanical key blade (from inside the key fob) or a small screwdriver into the exposed slot
- Press down firmly on the override mechanism while pushing the gear selector forward to Neutral
Shift-lock override location

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you must use the mechanical shift lock override. Remove the small trim cover ahead of the shifter base and insert the mechanical key or small screwdriver into the slot. Press down while moving the selector forward. The electronic parking brake may remain engaged - if it cannot be released, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels free or EPB mechanically overridden (requires additional procedure).
