The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake firmly.
- Turn the ignition to the ACC or ON position if possible (this may require jump-starting the battery or using a jump box).
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Locate the shift lock override slot—it is a small rectangular opening with a cover cap located on the right side of the shifter base on the center console.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cover cap.
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously moving the shifter from Park to Neutral.
- If the vehicle has electrical power, the shift lock should release; if completely dead, you may need to manually hold the override down while moving the shifter.
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be rolled or loaded onto a flatbed.

With zero 12V power, the shift lock override slot still functions mechanically. Insert the key blade into the override slot and press down firmly while moving the shifter. You may need to rock the vehicle slightly if the parking pawl is binding. If the steering lock is also engaged, you will not be able to steer, so flatbed transport is strongly recommended.
