🚨 2021 BMW X4 M40i: Emergency Neutral
The 2021 X4 M40i uses BMW's electronic gear selector lever on the center console, a spring-loaded stalk that returns to center after each input.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press START button without brake pedal, or use mechanical key if battery is dead).
- Locate the shift lock override slot: it is a small rectangular opening with a plastic cap on the left side of the shifter base, near the driver's side.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or the metal key blade to pry off the small plastic cap covering the override slot.
- Insert the key blade or screwdriver into the override slot and press down firmly while simultaneously pulling the gear selector rearward past Drive to Neutral.
- If the electronic parking brake is engaged and non-functional due to power loss, you may need to release it manually (see owner's manual for EPB emergency release procedure, typically requires removing rear seat cushion and pulling mechanical cable).
- Verify the gear indicator shows 'N' on the instrument cluster or shifter display.

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery, press the START button with the mechanical key fob blade inserted in the emergency slot (usually in steering column cover) to achieve accessory power for shift lock release. If this fails, the shift lock override slot can be used mechanically, but the electronic parking brake will remain engaged and must be released manually via the rear access procedure.
