⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and the vehicle is on level ground.
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode (press START/STOP without brake pedal) to provide power to the shifter electronics if battery has any charge remaining.
- Press and hold the brake pedal.
- Move the gear selector lever forward and hold briefly to engage neutral.
- If the shifter remains locked and battery power exists, check for a blown fuse (F87 in the luggage compartment fuse box) that controls the shift interlock.
- If no electrical power is available, locate the shift lock release cover on the center console—it is a small rectangular cap near the base of the gear selector on the right side.
- Use a flat-head screwdriver or the metal key blade to carefully pry off the shift lock override cap.
- Insert the screwdriver or key into the override slot and press down while simultaneously moving the selector forward to neutral.
- The vehicle can now roll; ensure proper chocking before releasing the parking brake.

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must use the mechanical shift lock override: remove the small cap near the shifter base (right side), insert a screwdriver or key, press down, and move the selector to neutral. The steering will remain locked, so the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with wheels free—it cannot be steered.
