⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode (press start button twice without brake pedal) to power up the shifter electronics
- Press and hold the brake pedal firmly
- Push the shifter forward to the first detent and release to select neutral
- If the transmission will not shift electronically, locate the shift lock override
- Look for a small circular or rectangular cover near the base of the shifter on the right side
- Pry off the cover using a flathead screwdriver or trim tool
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot beneath the cover
- Press down on the override mechanism while pushing the shifter forward to neutral
- Hold the override until the transmission engages neutral (you may hear a click or see the neutral indicator)

With zero electrical power
With completely dead battery: jump-start the vehicle or connect a battery maintainer to provide at least minimal 12V power, as the electronic transmission requires power to shift. The shift lock override is mechanical but the transmission selector motor needs electricity. Electronic parking brake must also be released electrically or manually at the rear calipers. Flatbed towing is strongly recommended with dead battery.
