🚨 2025 BMW X4: Emergency Neutral

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and ensure the vehicle is on level ground or properly chocked.
- If the battery has any charge remaining, turn the ignition to the ON position (press start button without brake pedal, or insert key and turn to position 2).
- With ignition on, press and hold the brake pedal, then move the shifter to neutral (middle position) and release.
- If the battery is completely dead and you cannot access ignition-on mode, you must use the shift lock override: locate the small rectangular cover panel on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side of the shifter assembly).
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or similar tool wrapped in cloth to carefully pry off the override cover.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver or the vehicle's key into the override slot and push down firmly while simultaneously pulling the shifter toward neutral.
- The shifter should release from Park; move it to the neutral position.
- If the vehicle must be towed, ensure the shifter is in neutral; for distances over a few feet, a flatbed or dolly under the rear wheels is recommended to avoid damage to the drivetrain (especially on xDrive AWD models).
Shift-lock override location
Small rectangular cover panel on the left (driver's) side of the shifter base on the center console; the override slot is directly beneath this cover.
With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you cannot unlock the steering column electronically or shift normally. Jump-start the vehicle or connect an external 12V power source to the battery (or use the jump-start terminals under the hood) to restore minimal power, then follow the ignition-on procedure. If jump-starting is impossible, use the mechanical shift lock override as described above.
