The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and parking brake is engaged if possible.
- Locate the shift lock override slot - it is typically covered by a small rectangular plastic cap on the console near the shifter base, usually on the right side adjacent to the shifter.
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver or trim removal tool to carefully pry off the small plastic cover cap.
- Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver, key blade, or similar tool into the exposed override slot.
- Press down or push in on the override mechanism (depending on orientation) while simultaneously pressing the shifter side release button.
- With the override activated and button pressed, move the shifter forward to Neutral position.
