⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is fully engaged and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition to position II (ON) if battery has any charge remaining
- Firmly depress the brake pedal
- Locate the small rectangular shift lock override slot on the console trim directly adjacent to the shifter base on the driver's side
- Remove the small plastic cover cap (it may require a small flathead screwdriver to pry gently)
- Insert a key, small screwdriver, or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
- While holding the override down, press the shifter button and move the lever to Neutral
- If completely successful, the vehicle can now roll; if not, you may need to rock the vehicle slightly while attempting the override

With zero electrical power
With zero electrical power, the mechanical shift lock override still functions. You will not have any dashboard illumination and the key may not turn to position II, but the mechanical override slot bypasses the electrical interlock completely. Ensure you manually release the steering lock by inserting the key and attempting to turn it while moving the steering wheel slightly side-to-side.
