🚨 2025 BMW Z4 M40i: Emergency Neutral

The G29 Z4 M40i uses BMW's electronic gear selector lever mounted on the center console, operated via an electric shift-by-wire system.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
  2. Turn the ignition to ON position (press Start button without brake pedal twice) to energize the shifter electronics if 12V power is available.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal, then move the gear selector forward or backward to position N (neutral).
  4. If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rectangular cover panel on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side) by prying gently with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver.
  5. Insert a key, screwdriver, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to N.
  7. If successful, the transmission will engage neutral and the vehicle can roll freely.
  8. For towing or flatbed loading, ensure the ignition is in ON or ACC mode so the steering column remains unlocked.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter cannot be moved and the shift lock override will not function. The steering column will also remain locked. Jump-start the vehicle to provide temporary 12V power, then immediately shift to neutral. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels free-rolling (not ideal) or dollied. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground.
