⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the vehicle is on a flat surface and apply the parking brake if functional.
- Turn the ignition to ON position (press Start button without brake pedal twice) to energize the shifter electronics if 12V power is available.
- Press and hold the brake pedal, then move the gear selector forward or backward to position N (neutral).
- If the shifter remains locked, locate the shift lock override: remove the small rectangular cover panel on the left side of the shifter base (driver's side) by prying gently with a trim tool or flathead screwdriver.
- Insert a key, screwdriver, or similar tool into the exposed override slot and press down firmly.
- While holding the override down, press the brake pedal and move the shifter to N.
- If successful, the transmission will engage neutral and the vehicle can roll freely.
- For towing or flatbed loading, ensure the ignition is in ON or ACC mode so the steering column remains unlocked.

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, the electronic shifter cannot be moved and the shift lock override will not function. The steering column will also remain locked. Jump-start the vehicle to provide temporary 12V power, then immediately shift to neutral. If jump-starting is not possible, the vehicle must be winched onto a flatbed with wheels free-rolling (not ideal) or dollied. Do NOT attempt to tow with drive wheels on the ground.
