🚨 2009 Buick LaCrosse: Emergency Neutral

The 2009 LaCrosse uses a traditional console-mounted automatic transmission lever with electronic shift lock.

Expert-verified by Chris Hackleman & Jeff Moore — master technicians, 20+ years each.
⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.

The procedure

  1. Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
  2. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON position if battery has any charge remaining
  3. Locate the shift lock release cover on the console, positioned directly to the left of the shifter base near the P position
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver or key to carefully pry off the small rectangular override cover
  5. Insert a flathead screwdriver or similar tool into the override slot and press down firmly
  6. While holding the override down, press the brake pedal (if power available) and move the shifter from Park to Neutral
  7. If no brake power, continue holding override down and use firm pressure to move shifter to Neutral
  8. Once in Neutral, remove tool and replace cover

With zero electrical power
With a completely dead battery, you will not be able to turn the ignition to ACC. The mechanical override will still function - simply pry off the cover, press the override button down with a tool, and apply firm steady pressure to move the shifter to Neutral. The shift lock mechanism is mechanical and does not require power once overridden.
