⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Attempt to turn ignition to ON/RUN position - this generation requires some electrical power for shift-by-wire system
- If you have at least minimal battery voltage, turn ignition to ON
- Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small cover on the left side of the shifter base, near the front of the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to pry off the override access cover
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press firmly
- While holding override, press brake pedal and move shifter to Neutral
- Release override and replace cover

With zero electrical power
The 2011 LaCrosse uses shift-by-wire technology which requires electrical power to operate. With a completely dead battery, the mechanical override alone may not allow shifter movement as the transmission control module needs power to release the parking pawl. If you have zero power and cannot jump-start even briefly to get into Neutral, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with the drive wheels off the ground using dollies or wheel-lift. Do not flat-tow this vehicle.
