🚨 2012 Buick LaCrosse: Emergency Neutral
The 2012 LaCrosse eAssist (mild hybrid) uses an electronic console-mounted shifter with shift-by-wire technology identical to the conventional gas models.

⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Set the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Attempt to turn ignition to ON/RUN position - hybrid system requires electrical power for shift-by-wire operation
- If you have at least minimal 12V battery voltage, turn ignition to ON (hybrid system does not need to be READY)
- Locate the shift lock override slot - look for a small cover on the left side of the shifter base, near the front of the console trim
- Use a small flathead screwdriver or trim tool to pry off the override access cover
- Insert a screwdriver or key into the override slot and press firmly
- While holding override, press brake pedal and move shifter to Neutral
- Release override and replace cover
- If vehicle must be towed, ensure it is on a flatbed or with drive wheels off the ground

With zero electrical power
The eAssist hybrid uses shift-by-wire technology which requires 12V electrical power to operate. With a completely dead 12V battery, the mechanical override alone will not allow shifter movement as the transmission control module needs power to release the parking pawl. The high-voltage hybrid battery does not help if the 12V system is dead. If you have zero 12V power and cannot jump-start even briefly, the vehicle must be loaded onto a flatbed with drive wheels off the ground using dollies or wheel-lift.
⚡ EV / hybrid warning
The LaCrosse eAssist is a mild hybrid with electric motor assistance integrated into the transmission. NEVER flat-tow this vehicle - it must be transported on a flatbed or with the front drive wheels completely off the ground. Towing with drive wheels on the ground will cause the electric motor to generate uncontrolled voltage and can severely damage the hybrid system electronics and battery. Even in Neutral, do not tow on the ground.
