⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Apply the parking brake firmly and chock the wheels
- Insert the key and turn the ignition to the RUN position (if battery has charge)
- Locate the shift lock override button on the lower portion of the steering column shroud, typically on the right side near where the shifter shaft enters the column
- Remove the small plastic cap or access cover if present (some models have exposed button)
- Press and hold the shift lock override button with a pen, screwdriver tip, or similar tool
- While holding the override, move the column shifter to Neutral
- If you cannot locate a distinct override button, look for a small access hole near the shifter base on the column

Lower right side of the steering column shroud near the shifter shaft, typically covered by a small cap or accessible through a small hole
With zero electrical power
The 1995 Roadmaster's shift lock is largely mechanical. With no power, you may still be able to override it manually: ensure the key is in the ignition (turned to any position if possible), then use the override button. The mechanical linkage should allow override even without electrical power, though some resistance may be felt. If completely stuck, the steering column lower shroud can be removed for direct access to the shift lock mechanism.
