⚠️ Chock the wheels first — neutral means the car can roll. Set the parking brake while you work, never stand downhill of the vehicle, and try a 12-volt jump before any override: power fixes most stuck-in-park problems instantly.
The procedure
- Ensure the parking brake is firmly set and wheels are chocked
- Turn the ignition key to the ACC or ON position if battery power is available (this energizes the shift lock solenoid)
- Press the brake pedal fully
- Move the shift lever to Neutral
- If the shifter will not move due to dead battery or failed brake switch, proceed to manual override
- Locate the shift lock override slot on the steering column - it is a small rectangular opening typically found on the left side of the column shroud near the base of the shifter
- Insert a small flathead screwdriver or the key blade into the override slot
- Press or push the override mechanism while simultaneously moving the shift lever toward Neutral
- Once in Neutral, the vehicle can be moved or loaded onto a flatbed

With zero electrical power
With zero 12V power, you must use the manual shift lock override slot. The ignition key cannot be turned without power, but the mechanical override will release the shifter. Insert a tool into the override slot and maintain pressure while shifting to Neutral. Do not attempt to start or run the vehicle without a functional battery.
